Diploma In Drugs Counselling Theory & Intervention Skills

Course Description
The Merchants Quay Ireland/University College Dublin Diploma in Drugs Counselling Theory & Intervention Skills offers an opportunity to persons working with drug users to gain training in this interesting and complex field. The course runs over one academic year (September–May) and includes classroom teaching and placements in specialist drugs services.

Course Objective
  • To provide students with a range of skills and interventions to engage effectively with clients presenting with addiction issues.
  • To develop students’ individual counselling intervention skills in beginning, sustaining, and maintaining a helping relationship.
  • To give students a group work perspective in working with addiction/dependency from both a theoretical and experiential framework.
  • To examine the areas of social and drug policy with a view to teasing out the wider macro issues in relation to problem drug and alcohol use.
  • To offer students a one month placement in a drug/alcohol agency in order to observe and engage in supervised work and to provide students with an opportunity to link theory to practice .
  • To examine the interface between problem drug use and mental health and to explore the role of dual diagnosis in addiction/dependency


Awarding Body
This diploma is awarded by the National University of Ireland (University College Dublin).

Course Duration
The duration of this course is 260 hours (part-time) over one academic year of three semesters. This involves one day per- week plus a four week full-time practical work placement. The diploma course is run all day every Tuesday from 10am -4.30pm over the academic year.

Course Fee
The course fee is €3255.00.

Practical Experience
The course committee will require students to complete a 140 hour (4 week) placement with a drug/alcohol agency. Prospective students will need to secure a month off from their employer in order to complete the one month placement. The one month practicum cannot take place in the students current employment. Merchants Quay will secure the placement on behalf of the student.

Eligibility
Those who have successfully completed the certificate level in Drugs Counselling Theory & Intervention Skills or any equivalent course.

How to apply
Admission to the course is limited. Course application forms should be returned to Merchants Quay Ireland with a €30 processing fee. Closing date for receipt of applications is Friday April 30th 2010. Successful applicants will be required to attend an interview in May 2010. Places will be offered to candidates subject to successful interview. The course will commence in September 2010.
In the case of applicants currently engaged in full-time work, it is expected that if offered a place they will be able to secure the necessary secondment from their employer. We recommend that all applicants who intend to seek secondment should immediately inform their employers that they are applying for the course.
