Covenants
A Deed of Covenant is an agreement to pay a fixed sum each year out of your income for a minimum of four years.

How is the money is used
In order to accord with the legal requirements governing covenants, all donations received through covenants by Merchants Quay Ireland are used by our research and development division, allowing Merchants Quay Ireland to undertake and publish valuable studies. Research is essential to our work, because it is only by understanding the nature, extent and causes of the drug use or homelessness that we can help people to take control of their lives.

Are there any extra benefits to Merchants Quay Ireland?
Yes. Assuming covenanted monies are donated by Irish taxpayers, Merchants Quay Ireland can reclaim the amount of tax payable on your gift.

Are there any benefits to the donor?
Yes. Because Merchants Quay Ireland uses the money it receives through covenants for research purposes, you may reclaim tax on our covenanted donations from the Revenue Commissioners. If you have donated, say, €100 and you pay tax at the higher rate of 42%, you will get back the difference between the higher and the lower tax rate (20%) i.e. €22.

Are there any restrictions on what I can give?
Yes. You can only use the covenant system to make donations out of tax-chargeable salary that is gross salary less mortgage tax relief. Also, covenants may not exceed 5% of taxable salary.
